How to care for your Jewelry

Don’t you love that new jewelry shine? As we all know, over time our jewelry begins to show signs of wear and tear. Here are some simple steps you can take to preserve your jewelry’s look and feel.

  1. It is normal for sterling silver jewelry to tarnish slightly over time. In order to minimize tarnishing, always keep your jewelry in an air tight container or zip lock bag when not in use. If available, an anti-tarnish strip can be kept in the bag with the jewelry to aid in keeping it looking shiny and new.
  2. Always put your jewelry on very last when getting dressed. Chemicals such as perfume, hairspray and other products can build up on your jewelry over time and cause it to tarnish faster than normal.
  3. Avoid wearing your jewelry in the shower or bath, during strenuous activities, at night while sleeping or during other activities that may cause the jewelry to endure excessive strain.
  4. If you want to restore that new jewelry shine, I recommend using Tarn-X tarnish remover. It is available at many retail stores and usually is located in the cleaning supply isle. Be very careful to only immerse the sterling silver parts of your jewelry as it may cause discoloration of gemstones, pearls and crystals. Be sure to test an area before immersing the entire jewelry piece to check for discoloration. Rinse and dry your jewelry immediately after exposing it to Tarn-X solution. Allow it to air dry completely before placing it back in its air tight container.
  5. In general, use common sense while wearing your jewelry. If you are not sure how a liquid, chemical or activity is going to affect your jewelry, take it off and put it in a safe place before partaking.
